The Whale's Eye
When I was growing up, my Grandparents on my mother’s side, lived in Chatham, on Cape Cod. I spent summers on the Cape from birth through College, long after they had passed, renting cabins with friends, working at restaurants or driving an Ice Cream Truck. Their house was set back from the street with a long seashell driveway, not uncommon for the time and place. The house on the street was occupied by the Rockanellos. From what I remember, a jolly couple, who ran a hand carved wooden toy shop out of the barn, called ‘The Whale’s Eye’. This image is the front door to the barn where the magic lived. I took this photograph in 2009 on a family trip back to scatter my dads ashes in Nantucket Sound. He had passed earlier that year. My brothers, our mom and I still try to go back each summer as a family, whenever we can. There are so many memories through this door.
